Planning a proposal? After you’ve chosen the perfect engagement ring, no doubt your thoughts will have turned to the best way to pop the question.

In our experience, a few thoughtful, well planned words are the best way to set the scene for what’s to come. Crafting the perfect proposal speech requires authenticity, sincerity, and a little forward planning. Here are our tips for making sure your words are unforgettable, for all the right reasons:

Start With a Meaningful Intro

Starting your speech with an anecdote that captures the essence of your relationship is a great way to begin. Don’t feel like you have to focus on major milestones in your proposal speech, sometimes sharing quiet observations can be the perfect way to summarise the uniquely intimate connection you and your partner share.

Speak From the Heart

If ever there was a moment to get vulnerable, it’s now. This is your chance to wear your heart on your sleeve and share your dreams, your fears, your love and your hopes for the future with your partner. Perhaps you could tell them how they’ve changed your life, and what makes them irreplaceable to you.

Lighten the Mood

Sprinkling a little humour into your speech can be a great way to lighten the mood and create a comfortable, intimate atmosphere. If you plan on proposing in front of friends and family, referencing an insider joke is a great way to highlight the unique bond you share. Remember to keep it tasteful though, you don’t want a bad joke to overshadow the moment. If in doubt, it’s always worth seeking a second opinion.

Practice Makes Perfect

As with any act of public speaking, a run through ahead of time is never a bad idea. Whether it’s just you in front of the mirror at home, or reciting your speech to a trusted confidant, take the time to have a couple of practice runs before your big moment. If you’re able to commit your speech to memory then fantastic, but this isn’t an exercise in public speaking – there’s no shame in falling back on a few written notes.

Keep It Concise

As a general guide, we’d recommend planning a speech that lasts between 2 and 5 minutes. This should give you more than enough time to enjoy recapping some relationship highlights without losing your core message – your love for your partner, and your wish to spend the rest of your life together.

So there you have it. In short, a memorable proposal speech boils down to careful planning, authentic words and taking a moment to set the stage for the next chapter of your lives together. But, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Ultimately, there’s no such thing as ‘perfect’ and a few fluffed lines will become part of your story for years to come.
