Toi et Moi - United Through Our Differences

They say opposites attract, and what better way to illustrate this than with a Toi et Moi ring? Meaning ‘you and me’ in French, this sparkling design has long been considered one of the most romantic. Much like a union between kindred spirits, the Toi et Moi design brings two opposites together in a scintillating dance.

A History of 'You & Me'

The Toi et Moi design has captivated hearts for centuries. Originating in the early 18th-century, this iconic style was made famous by Napoleon Bonaparte, who gifted Josephine a Toi et Moi ring to symbolise their eternal bond.

The design features two diamonds or gemstones alternating in colour, shape or size, each representing the coming together of two souls. Through history, Toi et Moi jewellery has graced the hands of royalty and celebrities alike, becoming the ultimate emblem of a deep and meaningful connection.

Harmony & Balance

At the heart of our Toi et Moi collection lies the interplay of harmony and balance. Our design’s signature dual gemstones are a celebration of two elements merging into a seamless whole.

Whether an engagement ring that elegantly wraps around the finger or a necklace that frames the neckline, each piece in this collection is meticulously crafted to achieve the perfect measure of shape, colour and sparkle.

Versatile and adaptable, they can be worn on any occasion, whether casual and formal. With fluid lines and balanced proportions, each piece blends seamlessly into every style.

Forever Iconic: Toi et Moi Rings

The classic Toi et Moi ring, seen through the years.

Joséphine De Beauharnais

The first Toi et Moi ring was gifted in 1796 by Napoleon Bonaparte to his beloved Joséphine De Beauharnais. Napoleon was said to be besotted with Josephine and wanted to make an impression, and it worked. Set with a matching round diamond and sapphire, the Toi et Moi design quickly rose to popularity among nobility.

Jacky Kennedy

The Kennedys spent a great amount of time researching the perfect ring, even after JFK made his proposal to Jackie. In the end, she settled on a dazzling diamond and emerald piece. Both emerald-cut, the two stones complement each other beautifully, and are surrounded by a flurry of diamond detailing.

Solange Knowles

Modern iterations of Toi et Moi show an array of stones and shapes, from pared down minimalism to bold asymmetrical designs. Solange Knowles’ wedding ring, set with two diamonds facing each other, is a wonderful example of what can be achieved with this versatile design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Toi et Moi rings and jewellery are versatile by the very nature of their design. The infinite combinations of gemstone types, shapes and colour open every possibility to make your design unique. Popular stones for Toi et Moi rings include diamonds, precious stones such as emeraldsapphire or ruby, as well as more unconventional choices such as pearl.

In our collection, we offer a range of diamond shapes, as well as a yellow diamond design. Should you wish to have your piece created with a different stone, you can commission your piece through our bespoke service.

Our jewellery experts recommend you select a stone that measures well for sturdiness and durability. Although beautiful, softer stones such as emeralds and pearls are more prone to knocks and damage, we would therefore recommend harder stones such as diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

The French term ‘Toi et Moi’ translates to ‘You and Me’. With two stones connecting as a centrepiece, the design itself was created to symbolise a unique bond. Often, Toi et Moi designs feature two stones of varying colour and shape, highlighting that differences in a couple are something to be appreciated and celebrated.

Due to their symbolism, Toi et Moi rings are often gifted for proposals. However, this does not necessarily mean they can only be worn as engagement rings. Many purchase Toi et Moi designs as promise or anniversary rings. Toi et Moi symbolises two people united as a whole, this meaning can therefore extend to other types of relationships aside romantic ones. In conclusion : the choice is yours when it comes to choosing a Toi et Moi ring.

The cost of a Toi et Moi ring can vary depending on the stones you choose for your design. Our selection only features Toi et Moi rings set with lab-grown diamonds or tsavorite gemstones, making them significantly more affordable.

Of course, should you decide to have your ring set with natural diamonds, this can increase the final cost of your design. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the price of diamonds increases exponentially with carat size. That is, you will see a significant price difference between two 0.90-carat diamonds and a 1-carat diamond pair.

If you wear your ring or jewellery every day, our team recommends cleaning it approximately every two weeks. If you carry out a lot of household tasks, do activities outdoors, or handle a lot of products day-to-day, you’ll need to clean a ring more often to prevent the build-up of residue.

How to clean your Toi et Moi jewellery:

- Fill a small bowl with warm water and a little soap. Some gentle dishwashing soap is ideal.

- Place your ring in the bowl and leave it to soak for 15 minutes. This will loosen any residue build-up.

- Ensure your sink drain is covered, then rinse your ring under some warm water.

- Use a soft, clean toothbrush to remove any remaining dirt. We recommend using this toothbrush solely for cleaning jewellery.

- Use a lint-free cotton cloth to dry your ring. Let it air dry for up to half an hour before you wear it again.

Avoid using paper towels or harsh chemicals, such as bleach and commercial jewellery cleaners. They can damage your jewellery. If you purchase a piece from 77 Diamonds, you can visit us for a free ultrasonic cleaning service which we recommend doing twice a year.

From when it first made its appearance in 1796, the Toi et Moi style has evolved in many ways. The traditional design usually features one diamond and one precious gemstone (usually a ruby or sapphire), in either round or pear shapes, and set in yellow gold.

Today, we’re seeing more unconventional takes on the design with asymmetrical stone settings, and unique gemstone choices such as pearl. The classic diamond look still holds its appeal, though, and many like to combine two diamonds of different shapes or cut styles (such as brilliant and step cut).

Ultimately, the choice is yours when it comes to Toi et Moi jewellery. The very nature of this design affords a great amount of choice and possible combinations for you to really reflect your personality and style.

Of course! Our designers would be happy to assist should you wish to alter a Toi et Moi piece from our selection, or if you’d prefer to create something completely unique. We can source any diamond or precious gemstone from all over the world, the sky is very much the limit. Simply send a request to our bespoke service, providing as much detail as you can, and our jewellers will come back to you with a quote.
