Winter brings its own brand of magic, from snowy escapades to fireside evenings. As you slip into your cosy knits and embrace the chill, don’t forget about your diamond — it also needs a little care to keep its shine all season. Here are a few tips to safeguard your engagement ring during the upcoming winter months.

Careful of Cold Fingers

When temperatures drop, so do your ring’s chances of staying put. Cold weather shrinks your fingers, making it all too easy for your ring to slip off unnoticed — especially if your ring is already loose to begin with. Keep an eye on the fit during ski trips, wintery escapades or even just grabbing a coffee. Our advice: better be safe than sorry.

Don’t Get Too Caught Up

Knitted gloves and statement scarves are a winter fashion must, but they’re also a playground for snagging your ring. A quick snag can not only damage your beautiful winter wear, but also damage your ring’s claws if enough pressure is applied. That in turn can loosen the hold on your precious diamond

Avoid De-Icing

Chipping away at your frozen windscreen? We’ve all been there. Tossing salt onto your icy driveway? Pause. Those harsh chemicals and gritty substances can tarnish metals and dim your diamond’s dazzle. Best remove your ring before diving into de-icing duties — it’s a small step that saves big headaches.

Holiday Cheer? No Fear

Glittering lights and bubbly champagne might steal the show during the festivities, but don’t let your ring’s brilliance take a back seat. This should go without saying, but please (please) remove your ring before handling sticky holiday food.

When removing your diamond, we recommend you always put it in the same place you usually keep it safe — we know it’s a little annoying when you’re already so busy with all the cooking and holiday merrymaking, but trust us: there’s nothing worse than forgetting where you put your engagement ring amid all the Christmas hustle and bustle.

Clean Regularly

Between layering on hand cream and slipping into fuzzy gloves, your ring is bound to pick up some grime or snag on some material. Keep the sparkle alive with a gentle cleaning routine: all you need is a warm water soak, a drop of dish soap, and a soft toothbrush.

I always advise clients to clean their jewellery as often as they see fit. That can be once every two weeks or once a month depending on how often you wear it. There’s nothing better than seeing your diamond sparkle again after a good clean-up

Going on a Winter Break?

Look at you! Whether you’re careering down the slopes or jetting off to find some sun, think ahead. Snowy activities like skiing or snowball fights can put your ring at risk, so consider leaving it in a safe spot. And, remember, if you’re heading on holiday it’s always best to have your engagement ring fully insured against loss, theft or damage.

With all that in mind, all that’s left is to celebrate your stylish winter era with your gorgeous ring. For more information on how to care for your diamond jewellery, visit 77’s care guide.
