The rules of engagement
What should you spend on her engagement ring?
Once you’ve decided to propose, the next question you’ve got to ask is one you need to answer. How much should I spend on an engagement ring? There are no rules set in stone but it is one of the most debated discussions when it comes to diamonds. It seems like there are mountains of myths from how many months salary you should spend to the significance of carat size. But, there really is no right answer. It can seem a bit retro to put stringent rules around something that at its heart is a truly sentimental and personal
While selecting an engagement ring or another piece of diamond jewellery, we are often asked about the differences between various metals, their durability and aftercare. This week, 77 World describes each metal, aftercare tips and maintenance.
For diamond jewellery, we recommend the following metals: platinum or 18 karat white, yellow or rose gold. Diamonds should be set with metals strong enough to support and hold the stone securely. For instance, pure gold is 24 karat which is too soft to be used for diamond jewellery, so we use 18 karat gold which is mixed with other alloys to add strength and reinforcement while still containing a high gold content of 75%. Precious metals are rarely used in their purest form.
- Platinum is the most durable metal so is ideal for engagement rings. The ring pictured above is the Elixir with a 1ct Marquise diamond by 77D
Here at 77 Diamonds we love bringing couples closer together with beautiful diamond jewellery and our latest competition did just that. We selected three couples, who are hoping to get engaged in the near future, and invited them to join us in our Mayfair showroom to take a look at a selection of our stunning engagement rings and to each select which ring they would choose. A big reveal at the end discovered which couple were a perfect match and just how well they know one another. The winning couple got to walk away with a £10,000 diamond that they could then use to fashion their very own engagement ring or another piece of jewellery.

At 77 Diamonds, we understand the importance of an engagement ring and the meaning behind such a gesture to both the person that give the ring and the person that relieves the ring. This is the reason why we make every one of our rings to order based on the specifications of the purchaser.
1. A ring design is unique to the person wearing the ring, it is there to represent the styles and tastes of the wearer but chosen by the person they hold so dear.
2. The diamond is the life of the ring, it symbolises the love and fire of the relationship that is cemented with the giving of such a beautiful natural gift.
3. You can view images and videos of all our ring styles or better yet, come visit us and see them first hand to help make your decision.
4. Produced in our London, our rings are handcrafted especially for you to make your proposal a precious and unique one.
5. Whether you’re collecting it, or it’s being shipped nationally or internationally, our rings will be ready and waiting for you for when you need them.

We know the importance of jewellery in a person’s life. Those pieces to be worn on special occasions, engagement rings, those diamond studs you wear every day, or maybe it’s your wedding band – the symbol of your biggest commitment – it’s all important. Because of this, we have one suggestion: Please do insure your jewellery!
What can you do to insure your jewellery?
From us, you will get a valuation certificate for your purchased jewellery, this will be at retail value of your item(s) and is the recommended value for insurance purpose.
Check your home and contents insurance – you will already have a policy, and adding one or two extra items is easy enough.
Alternatively, 77 Diamonds works with jewellery insurance company TH March to help you with all your jewellery insurance questions and policies. You can contact them through their website HERE or by calling them on 01822 855555. Quote reference code “AS1 79T” and they will know you’ve bought from us.

The first in the 77 Diamonds series of blogs about jewellery production is going to tell you how we set a diamond into a ring.
1st Step: It all begins with a diamond.
2nd Step: Ring mount is prepared and secured for setting.
Step 3: Safely taking the diamond (do not try this at home!), our experienced setters assess the ring and the diamond dimensions.
Step 4: The diamond is placed in the setting to ensure it fits and the claws are evenly spaced.
Step 5: Using specialist tools, the claws are moved into place over the diamond to ensure it is secure and firmly supporting the diamond.
The ring is ready to be presented to the recipient and be worn with pride!
