When it comes to diamond earrings, the focus naturally is all on brilliance, but what holds these precious stones in place is just as important. Earring backs may be small, but they play a big role in both comfort, security and peace of mind. From classic butterfly clasps to secure screw backs and innovative Alpha locks, each type caters to a different need.
We asked our Product Specialist, Alex Banfield, to weigh in on the details that elevate each option, and how to choose the right one for your diamonds.
The Classic Touch: Butterfly Backs
Also known as push or scroll backs, butterfly clasps are perhaps the most well-known style. They work by sliding onto the earring post and holding it in place with tension between two small loops, shaped like a butterfly's wings.

Why choose them?
Lightweight and easy to put on, butterfly backs are ideal for those who regularly switch between earrings or prefer something unobtrusive. They sit flush against the ear and are quick to fasten, making them a popular choice for daily wear.
‘Butterfly backs are the go-to for ease and elegance,' says Alex, ‘At 77 Diamonds, we fine-tune the spring tension to ensure they feel secure without ever pinching. It’s all about balancing practicality with comfort.’
Keep in mind
Because they rely on tension, butterfly backs can occasionally loosen over time, especially if frequently removed. We recommend periodic checks or opting for replacement if you notice a softer grip.
For Extra Security: Screw Backs
Designed with durability in mind, screw backs feature a threaded post that requires the back to be twisted into place. This provides a robust, almost tamper-proof hold.
Why choose them?
Perfect for securing high-value earrings, screw backs give peace of mind, especially during travel or long wear. Once fastened, you can be sure these stay put.
‘For clients purchasing larger carat studs, I may recommend screw backs as an option,’ Alex advises. ‘However, due to the length it takes to place these backs on, we usually provide either butterfly backs or alpha backs to customers who purchase at 77.’
Keep in mind
While more secure, screw backs do take longer to fasten and remove. The threading can also wear over time, and may feel less comfortable if sleeping in earrings. Lastly - and one of the main reason why we at 77 don't offer screw backs - you can sometime screw the thread too far and break your earrings, especially if they are made of a soft metal.
A Modern Innovation: Alpha Backs
Sometimes known as Guardian backs, Alpha clasps combine the convenience of a push-on with the firm hold of a mechanical lock. Using internal grooves and a spring mechanism, they 'click' into place and won’t release without deliberate pressure.

‘For larger, heavier stones alpha backs are really the best option in my opinion,’ Alex continues, ‘they are durable, easy to put on and take off, while still providing that extra security without the complicated screw back system.’
Why choose them?
Alpha backs are ideal for those who want the simplicity of a push-back with added security, without the effort of threading. They’re especially popular for gift-giving, as they suit nearly every wearer.
Keep in mind
These fittings require a specially grooved post and tend to come at a slightly higher cost due to their more intricate mechanism. Another aspect to note is they can't get wet, as water can rust the spring mechanism over time — so avoid those impromptu dips or remember to remove your earrings before! That said, they are very easy to take off while still being extremely secure.
