A Marquise cut engagement ring is unique diamond cut that in that passed has been referred to as the “Navette” shape, meaning “little boat,” as the shape of the diamond is said to mirror the hull of a small boat. The Marquise cut diamond is vintage shape and design that maximises carat weight and appears larger than other stones of the same weight.

The unique long shape of the stone with its pointed edges will look to elongate the finger of the wearer while maintaining an appearance of great size and grandeur. It is important that the Marquise is not too shallow so as to avoid light passing through the back of the diamond and diminishing its brilliance and fire.

The Marquise Cut was created on the request of King Louis XV to mimic the smile of his then mistress, Madame de Pompadour. Jerry Hall, Victoria Beckham and Catherine Zeta-Jones all have this special and unique cut engagement ring.

Originating in French court in 1745, a Marquise cut diamond will usually have 56 to 58 facets and achieves its optimum appearance with a ratio of between 1.85 and 2.10. The cut optimises carat weight and will elongate the finger when worn.
