Scuba diver recovers new engagement ring from depths of lake

A professional scuba diver took to a lake in Minnesota, USA, equipped with a metal detector and managed to successfully fish out a brand new diamond engagement ring.

The story unfolded after a Minneapolis teacher witnessed her ring, worth $7,000 (£4,484), drop to the deep bottom of Lake Minnetonka. Sara Stocco, 27, had taken the ring off in order to keep it clean while she was applying suntan lotion to her newly made fiancé Adam Segar, 28.

Stocco had popped the ring temporarily into her mouth but instead it fell and bounced from the floor of the boat into the lake water. The couple recently got engaged in June and were out boating on the holiday-crowded lake for the day on July 4th, Independence Day.

A public information officer for the Water Patrol ad Lake Minnetonka, Lisa Kiava, explained, “People are tubing and water skiing. Pontoons are out there with barbecues. Small boats are fishing. [You see] huge yachts that you think would belong in Florida. There are tour boats for tourists that have a couple hundred people on them."

"It was chaotic. I just remember thinking, 'Oh, my gosh, I just lost my ring that I've had a little over a month,' Stocco revealed to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

However, Denny Geffre was called upon to rescue the expensive treasure. Geffre has been hunting for gems and treasures in lakes for over forty years and jumped at the opportunity to don his scuba diving gear and wetsuit to spend three whole days searching and combing the lake with the use of a metal detector.

Fortunately, Geffre did located the ring which had been buried in three inches of sand on the base of the lake in Minnesota and as a recognition of his hard work and effort, he was handed a $750 (£480.50) reward.
