Pret-a-plier: Black Swan bling
From the early days of fashion houses dressing their movie star muses, to designers taking their lead from the costume cupboards immortalised on celluloid; fashion and film have long shared a ubiquitous connection and this season is no different.
Hot on the heels of the release of Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan last Friday, fashion is about to step up to the barre and throw a few balletic shapes our way, with Alexander McQueen and Alberta Ferretti taking centre-stage. Channel your inner-prima ballerina with tulle and chiffon in blush pinks and oyster greys with delicately structured tops and dramatic silk skirted dresses. Of course the summer staple, the ballet pump is back but this time with renewed authenticity as only those in nude or pink with satin ribbons will do.

Such delicate tailoring of course demands certain jewellery. The drama of diamonds perfectly marries the soft lines and understated elegance, effortlessly taking the outfit from barre to bar in a demi-plié. However, if the prim and proper is not entirely your bag, follow the lead from sisterly design duo Rodarte, whose dramatic Swan Lake costumes in the Oscar-tipped film, have influenced a whole new aesthetic for the cocktail dress. The short and structured numbers in the film, seen on Portman and Co., have been adapted for the prêt-a-porter collections as waisted confections with sweetheart necklines. In typical Rodarte style though, the demure tailoring is subverted with theatrical lace and thickly-draped silk; the perfect textures to off-set the prim silhouette if they are a tad too girly for your tastes.
