Who’s Ring is it Anyway? The Rules of Engagement
What an adulterous year it has been. First Tiger Woods, then Ashley Cole, and now John Gunther. John who? Not to worry, unless you’re a religious reader of our news section, you’re not expected to know who that is—but you’ll soon find out. Of our infidels, Tiger managed to walk off with some bad press (if there is such a thing), a slight slump in his golf performance and a hefty divorce settlement of $150m; Cole lost his captaincy and is reported to have walked away £22m poorer; while Gunther, John Friggin’ Gunther, walked away with a diamond ring! To be fair, Gunther is neither rich, nor a celebrity, nor was he technically married, so no million dollar settlements to be expected here...but a $19,000 reward? What’s wrong with this picture?
To read the full article, please click here, but the story goes a little something like this. Danielle Cavalieri and John Gunther got engaged, Gunther cheated, they broke up, and he asked her to return the ring. When Cavalieri filed suit to keep the engagement ring, a US-court magistrate ruled against her claim citing the state law that an engagement ring is a “conditional” gift given “in contemplation of marriage,” adding that “fault in the cause of a break-up is irrelevant.” That is, if an engagement is broken for whatever reason, the ring that symbolised it should be returned. But my question is this: if fault in the cause of break-up is irrelevant, why does it so matter who paid for the ring? Surely, the only thing that entitles the man to the ring is a receipt for it, so are we saying that the little piece of paper detailing an economic exchange is more important than the love or “things” that a couple has gone through and shared?
Is an engagement ring merely a symbol of a promise to marry? Or is it a symbol of a relationship, of a commitment, and dare I say, fidelity to each other? Does the picture of a man on bended knee say “I’m contemplating marrying you,” or does it say, “you are the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with, the one and only woman...and will you do me the honour?” I think it’s more a case of the latter. If the engagement ring wasn’t so wrapped up in volumes of sentiment and was merely a promise to be legally wedded, trust me, it wouldn’t be wrapped up in volumes of cash either. Blame the cost of engagement rings on clever marketing, or DeBeers, or whoever you wish, but there’s something in their price that is meant to prove to a woman how much she is worth, not merely serve as a contemplation to marry. It should at least serve as collateral too, no?

Rising Trend: Mengagement Rings

Contemporary Men's Engagement Ring
The engagement ring is often only attributed to the lady in the relationship, the wife-to-be. But, in more recent times the equality of relationships has broken the tradition of the male asking the female, and it has become acceptable for men to enjoy celebrating their engagement with the symbol of a ring.
Whether the woman turns the tables and does the proposing herself, or she just wants her man to wear a ring marking their engagement after he has proposed to her, the men's engagement ring is a true statement of love and is growing in popularity. Jewellery retailers are all now beginning to market engagement rings exclusively for men.
Male engagement rings are worn in parts of Scandinavia and in the Basque regions of Spain, but until now they were scarce on the market in Britain, sold only by upmarket and on-demand designers.

Best Festive Celebrity Engagements and Weddings: Part 1
The festive season this year has seen many celebrities get engaged or married – ‘twas the season to be jolly. Christmas and New Year’s Eve are two of the most popular times chosen to jump in at the deep end and go for the proposal, so it is not surprising that we experienced frequent news of engagements or surprise wedding ceremonies from our favourite stars.
Here is a glance at some of the glamorous good tidings from celebrity A-listers which marked the joyful season.
Kevin Jonas & Danielle Deleassa
In a snowy and romantic New York in the lead up to Christmas, Kevin Jonas had the perfect wedding to his fiancé Danielle Deleassa, full of diamond-laden sparkle. Teenage hearts broke everywhere when the eldest member (aged 22) of teen music sensation the Jonas Brothers decided to tie the knot on the 19th of December 2009.
The couple exchanged Jacob and Co. wedding bands at Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York with an attendance of 400 strong. The pair got engaged back in July.
Deleasa's diamond eternity band was expertly crafted to feature 3.83 carats of round-cut brilliant diamonds set in 18-Karat white gold. For his own wedding band, Jonas chose stainless steel with single rows of brilliant-cut diamonds (making 2.24 carats altogether) set along each edge and side.
For walking down the aisle, Deleasa also wore 30 carat marquise and pear-shaped diamond chandelier earrings complete with a 19 carat, emerald-shaped diamond bracelet. There was even more sparkle for the celebrations.
Antique and Vintage Jewellery Designs
What is the difference between antique and vintage?
The term ‘vintage’ is used to describe styles that existed from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. Vintage jewellery can either be a reproduction of an original item or designed in the style of something that existed or it can be the actual genuine item. Vintage style jewellery is more ornamental and makes use of smaller decorative diamonds.
The term ‘antique’ is usually applied to jewellery that was made before 1920. Antique jewellery styles are named after the time period in which they were first created. Many antique styles continue to influence jewellery design today and are even reproduced at the request of discerning jewellery buyers. Antique style engagement rings were both elegant and delicate, made with great care and attention to detail.
Choosing the right time to propose
Engagement 101 Mag Blog offered an insightful article on ‘picking the right time to propose’ which inspired us to consider this quandary in more detail. After all, the day you decide to pop the question will be one of the most memorable in your life. They point out that when it comes to important announcements (like getting married or having a baby), let’s face it, people want their time to shine and do not want their thunder stolen. Which is why timing is incredibly crucial.
To avoid a clash of special events, someone who is planning to propose should consult their partner’s family (particularly siblings) and close friends to guarantee that their news will not stifle another’s. Not only is it considered proper proposal etiquette to be certain others are happy with your plans, but it is incredibly sensible on your part.
Many men decide to choose a special day for their proposal which will mark the occasion significantly. But which are the best days, and which ones should you avoid?
It may come as a shock to many guys that Valentine's Day is not the best day for a marriage proposal. Sure it’s romantic, but it’s also cliché. Every woman imagines her proposal to be special and unique; Valentine’s day is just too obvious and unimaginative.
