In 1796, a 26 year old soldier named Napoleon Bonaparte, after a 2 week engagement, married 32 year old divorcée Josephine de Beauharnais and caused a society scandal.
In spite of the controversy and the age difference, Napoleon who later become one of the most infamous European rulers in history, had a great love for his beloved Josephine and gifted her with an engagement ring with a difference. Two stones; one diamond and one sapphire.
Two hundred years later, the ring is now due to go to auction. Currently on display at Osenat auction house in Fontainebleau, France, the ring is expected to be sold with a guide price of £13,000!
A subtle gold setting set with a pear shape diamond and a blue sapphire of the same shape and size, they are encased within the setting facing each other.
At the time of proposing, Napoleon was a man with little means and his political success was yet to come to pass so this ring is simple yet beautiful in cost and design. The historical importance of course is the reason for it’s current hefty price tag.
The Bespoke Team at Seventy Seven Diamonds have looked into the design again and with a 0.50ct diamond and sapphire are able to create a historical replica for as little as £1400!*
