The planning stage

An engagement is a symbol of your love and commitment to each other, so it’s natural to spend time planning a meaningful proposal. 83% of proposers prepared ahead of time , with just under 50% taking between one and three months to do so. Only 13% proposed spontaneously — perhaps the perfect moment presented itself and they couldn’t resist?

While the proposal may have been a surprise in the moment, it might not have been unexpected — 57% of couples talk about an engagement over a year before they actually get engaged.

This is a healthy approach, says couples counsellor Crystal Bradshaw in an article by Brides:

“You'll be confident in your future together once you've discussed engagement and marriage thoroughly and clearly define where you both stand on the subject and see how you view your future together.”

Once you know you’re on the same page, these discussions often include conversations about the engagement ring, with 39% describing their preferred design. 29% joined their partner for ring shopping, while 9% were there when their partner bought the ring.

Where

The popularity of proposing abroad varies depending on where you’re from. In The Knot’s most recent Jewellery and Engagement Study, which is US-based, 8% of proposals took place while on holiday abroad, compared to the 14% which took place while on holiday in the US.

Numbers were much higher in a similar UK-based report, with 53% of proposals taking place abroad. The locations were often meaningful to the couple, such as the first place they went on holiday together, or somewhere they’d always wanted to visit together. Another survey found that 58% of women in the UK want to be proposed to while on holiday abroad.

According to Remitly, the 10 most popular places to propose around the world are:

How to plan a proposal abroad

Heart shape drawn in the sand surrounded by scattered pebbles on a beach.

Planning a proposal abroad is an exciting and deeply meaningful undertaking, one that requires careful thought and preparation. From selecting a breathtaking location to considering the local weather conditions and timing each detail just right, each element contributes to the magic of the occasion. In this chapter, we’ll explain how to plan this unforgettable milestone.

The location

You know you’d like to propose abroad, but where? Perhaps you have somewhere in mind already, like a destination you both love, or perhaps you’d like to make memories in a place that’s new to you both.

If you’re undecided, think about what you both enjoy while on holiday. Is it cultural sightseeing? Being outside and surrounded by nature? A relaxing beach break? This will help to narrow down your selection.

Research cultural norms

Look into the culture and social etiquette in your destination. While a display of affection may be seen as normal in many Western countries, in other countries it’s more frowned upon. Some places, including the UAE, Egypt, Indonesia and India, have public decency laws or social guidelines around kissing or holding hands. In those instances, a private proposal is more respectful.

The climate

Love endures through the wildest of weather, but the climate can also add an extra layer of magic to your proposal, so keep it in mind while you plan. Think the warmth of summer sunshine, or the crisp, bright white of fresh snow. Clear skies are welcome no matter what the temperature is and will look beautiful in any photos or videos.

While some places have similar seasons to the UK, they might not be subject to as much rain or unpredictability. Other countries will have a distinct wet and dry season instead, and although it usually costs less to visit during the wet season, you may also be at risk from heavy rain, thunderstorms, and even monsoons. Think about whether you’re comfortable with this before booking.

The backdrop

You’ve chosen your destination and you’ve got a high chance of good weather. But what about the exact place where you’ll get down on one knee? The scenery you choose can make all the difference in elevating the experience. A picturesque backdrop not only enhances the beauty of the occasion, but also creates a timeless setting that lives on in your photos and memories, whether it’s a cascading waterfall, breathtaking mountaintop, or a secluded beach.

Public or private?

Don’t forget, privacy and ambience play a crucial role in ensuring the moment feels personal, authentic, and perfectly tailored to you both.

Some people are happy to share their love with strangers. Others would rather an intimate setting, with them and their loved one alone. Consider what your partner would prefer before when you choose where to propose, so you know they’ll be comfortable.

The timing

Start by considering the time of day; sunrise and sunset often provide breathtaking lighting and a romantic atmosphere that's hard to beat. Check the weather forecast to avoid any unexpected rain or extreme heat, ensuring both you and your partner are comfortable.

If you're planning to propose in a public space, think about potential crowds and choose a time when the area is less busy for a more intimate moment. Lastly, give yourself some breathing space in your schedule — being rushed can take away from the magic of the occasion.

The photos

For some couples, a simple post-proposal selfie is all they need to remember this important milestone. Others would prefer photos or even video footage of the exact moment so they can look back on it together and share it with their loved ones. This is when a local photographer or videographer comes in. Someone from the area will know the best locations and times of day, helping you to perfect the details and capture the magic, and can remain discreetly hidden throughout.

If you’re on a budget, you can hide your phone in a secure spot (if it’s safe to do so) and press record. The quality of phone cameras has improved exponentially and can produce some excellent footage.

Keeping the ring safe

Journeying abroad with an engagement ring can unsettle the nerves of even the most confident travellers — it’s not every day you travel with such an important piece of jewellery. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to ensure it stays safe throughout your trip:

Take out insurance. This will cover worst-case scenarios such as loss and damage — just make sure it’s valid outside the UK. Some travel insurance may cover personal belongings already, including valuables like engagement rings, so always check before taking out a separate policy.

Research your airline’s security policies. Make sure there’s nothing in your luggage that could result in a search. Often, an engagement ring may be inspected separately, so you could attach a note to the box politely asking the security officer to be discreet.

Research customs regulations for your destination. Generally, you don’t need to declare it as long as the ring is going back to your home country as it’s considered to be personal goods.

Store the engagement ring properly. When travelling with the ring in your hand luggage or on the day of the proposal, ensure the ring is stored in the box and of in a secure pocket to avoid damaging or losing it.

Celebrating

Congratulations! Your proposal went smoothly and you’re ready to celebrate. Being abroad can make this even more special, because you don’t need to go back to your daily routine soon afterwards. Instead, you can use the remainder of your holiday to revel in the excitement of being newly engaged.
