Abdul Walid and Stephanie Acquaye first met in Ghana. Now based in Rome, both are social workers for the United Nations. After being together for about seven years, Abdul surprised Stephanie with a Parisian proposal and a stunning 77 Diamonds engagement ring. Here is their happily ever after.
“We met back in Ghana, our homeland, at a traffic signal near the main Airport in Accra. Steph was crossing the main road without noticing that the traffic lights had turned red and my reaction was to instantly pull her back. Fortunately, we both happened to be enrolled in the same French school. We ran into each other a couple more times and the rest is history,” Abdul shares.
She’s the one
From usually spending most of his time with his friends, Abdul found himself and Stephanie joint at the hip. “She is my Achilles heel. Steph is always the first person I want to share everything with,” he beams.
Abdul proposed in Paris last summer during sunrise at Place du Trocadéro with the Eiffel Tower as the backdrop. A four-day trip to Monaco and Paris was planned in celebration of Stephanie’s birthday and Abdul had a surprise up his sleeve.
He lured Stephanie to the spot telling her he had organised a special photoshoot for her in honour of her birthday. Once they arrived at the spot, there was a photography crew hiding away ready to capture the special moment. “I played the song ‘Matrimony’ by Wale featuring Usher and told her to listen to the words closely. Halfway through the song, when she began to smile, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She was in tears and accepted my proposal,” says Abdul.
The engagement ring
Abdul chose the Aphrodite ring by 77 Diamonds, which features a delicate diamond halo and band in 18k rose gold with a cushion diamond centre stone. Steph was over the moon, he says. “Her reaction to the engagement ring was priceless.”
The couple had their traditional wedding ceremony in January followed by a court signing ceremony in Ghana. They are currently finalising arrangements for their Italian wedding which will take place this autumn.
Congratulations Abdul and Stephanie, we wish you a lifetime of happiness!
