The nominees for this year’s Oscar ceremony were announced yesterday afternoon and it proved to be a proud day for the British film industry.

The much-praised The King’s Speech is up for a staggering twelve awards, including Best Actor for Colin Firth, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter respectively. Colin Firth is hotly-tipped to bag the Best Actor gong, after his success at last Sunday’s Golden Globes, where he scooped the same award. If The King’s Speech is successful next month, it will outdo the Oscar success of classic Ben-Hur which was nominated for and won eleven academy awards in 1960.

However, it appears the Brits may clean up at the Awards as artist Banksy, actor Christian Bale and directors Mike Leigh, Danny Boyle and Christopher Nolan have all been nominated too.

The 83rd Academy awards are to be held on February 27th, hosted by Anne Hathaway and Best Actor nominee James Franco. Remember to keep it here for the low-down on all the Red Carpet jewels!
