A collection of jewellery owned by iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor has fetched a record breaking amount at auction. ‘The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor’ sale took place yesterday at Christie’s auction house, New York, fetching an incredible $116million (£74.9million). The total amount is nearly double the previous world record raised for a single collection.
The entire collection was sold, including the famous diamond ring given to Taylor by husband Richard Burton, which fetched an incredible $8.8million (£5.7million). Another highlight was the sale of the La Peregrina pearl necklace; the 16th Century pearl was auctioned for $11.8million (£7.6million)!
A total of six world records were broken at the auction: the Taj Mahal diamond broke the world record for an Indian jewel after it sold for $8.8million (£5.7million).
The sale continues on Wednesday, when a collection of Taylor’s couture clothing will be auctioned.
