Naomi Campbell testimony postponed

Naomi Campbell was due to appear in court this week to testify in the war crimes trial of ex-Liberian president, Charles Taylor. However, the supermodel has been granted a request to postpone her appearance until August 5.

Prosecuters are hoping Campbell will give testimonial evidence to back claims that Taylor presented her with a diamond after a dinner party in South Africa in 1997.

Campbell was subpoenaed to testify after actress Mia Farrow, who also attended the dinner party, wrote to the court stating that Campbell had told her she was given a large diamond by Charles Taylor.

During an appearance on the American television show, Oprah, Campbell told the host that she did not want to be involved in the Taylor trial because she did not want to put her family in danger. However, she agreed to testify after the court's subpoena.

The prosecution believe that Campbells's testimony could rebut claims from the former Liberian leader that he never possessed rough diamonds. Though, Taylor's lawyers are calling the supermodel's testimony a publicity stunt.

Taylor has been on trial at The Hague since 2008 for 11 charges of instigating murder, rape, mutilation, sexual slavery and conscription of child soldiers. These charges are said to have taken place during wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone where more than 250,000 people were killed.

Taylor denies all charges and has stated he is being blamed for situations he did not control.
