Bond composer John Barry has died aged 77 in New York. York-born Barry is accredited with giving the James Bond franchise it’s distinctive and signature sound, a heady mix of jazzy big band numbers.
Barry composed the scores for 11 James Bond films; among them Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger, earning him 5 Oscars, a Grammy and a BAFTA Fellowship in 2005. However, his success was far wider reaching than just the Bond franchise alone as he also composed the score for Born Free and Dances With Wolves.
Barry continued working on film scores throughout his life, last collaborating on Bond film Quantum of Solace in 2008. The composer was married four times; his second wife was Jane Birkin.
