10 Great Proposal Ideas

Popping that life changing question is probably one of the hardest things to do in life.  But it doesn’t have to be too elaborate or expensive to impress your loved one on that special day you choose to propose.  Once you have settled on the perfect diamond engagement ring for your wife-to-be, the rest is in the personal gesture in how you decide to ask the question.  We know people are different; some romantic, some adventurous and daring, some traditional.   We’ve come up with some of the best ideas for proposing to help inspire you!

  1. Cook and set an elaborate candlelight table (or send in the caterers if you are not talented in the kitchen) for a quiet romantic dinner for two at home, an intimate setting. Serve her a glass of champagne with the diamond ring in the bottom or tied with a ribbon to the stem of the glass.
  2. During a romantic evening either at home or out on a date, present your love with three roses.  Explain to her that one represents the past, one represents the present, and the last one - with the ring tied to it - represents the future.
  3. For those art lovers out there: have an artist paint her portrait, adding a box with a loose diamond in her hand before you present it. When you present the painting, have the ring ready to hand when she inquires about it.
  4. During dinner at your favourite restaurant, arrange with the waiter to have the diamond ring in a box as one of the choices on the dessert tray. You can relay to her that she is the sweetest thing to you and you cannot resist her any longer!
  5. Have a plane write your proposal across the sky. Plan it for the day of a family picnic, boat trip or an outing that she will enjoy and so that she is certain to see it. Have your diamond ring at the ready when she sees your proposal.
  6. If you both like mystery and adventure:  create your very own tailored treasure hunt where you present the first clue with some beautiful flowers, and it ends when she finds you with the diamond ring, down on one knee.
  7. For the more traditional approach, ask her father for her hand in marriage. When the approval is given, make plans for the next family gathering and make your proposal to her in private with diamond in hand. When she says yes, stand up and announce your engagement to everyone present.
  8. If she is an avid radio listener or wakes up each morning to the clock radio, arrange for an advert to be announced on her usual station at just the right time so she hears your proposal.  Try to be beside her when she hears your public proposal, and have the diamond ring to hand.
  9. For those chocoholics among us: Dip the diamond box in chocolate, and put it in the centre of a box of chocolates when you are alone together one evening. She will be intrigued by the largest piece of chocolate – so pick it up and open it enthusiastically for her.
  10. Arrange to have dinner together at your favourite Chinese restaurant. Arrange for the waiter hand her a special fortune cookie with "Will you marry me?" in it. Or you could have it say, "You will receive a diamond in the very near future."  Then present the diamond in a box.  You can also carry this off at home if you’re a keen at cooking, and prepare your own fortune cookies or even put the ring inside one of them.

These are just a few ideas to get your creative minds going; remember, put some personality and thought into it and it’s sure to make it the most memorable day for both of you.  If you still need some guidance, look out for more SeventySeven Diamonds blog posts on clever, innovative proposal ideas – soon to come!
