Love is in the air for celebrities in 2010!

The opportunity for a fresh start in the new decade has spurred many celebrities to bite the bullet and ask their partners to marry them.  With spring well on its way we have seen more news of engagements and there will surely be more exciting proposal stories to come!   We take a look at some of the biggest celebrity relationships to get engaged this year so far...

Tara Reid and Michael Axtmann

Tara Reid got engaged to her internet entrepreneur boyfriend in January.  The American Pie actress agreed to marry Michael Axtmann after he popped the question during a romantic dinner in Los Angeles.

The couple started dating early in 2009, and are expected to tie the knot later this year since the 34-year-old revealed that she is planning a ‘Cinderella’ summer wedding somewhere warm.

The actress, famous for her role in teen flick American Pie will next be seen in the comedy film Last Call.  She was previously engaged to television personality Carson Daly several years ago but the couple split prior to securing a date.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden

The American actress Nicole Richie and her Good Charlotte front-man and rocker boyfriend, Joel Madden, revealed their plans to marry in February.

Richie, 28, announced the news during an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman and on arrival at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York city, a beaming Richie flashed her sparkling diamond engagement ring to photographers.

Richie and Madden began dating back in December 2006 and now have two children together: Harlow, 2, and Sparrow, 5 months.

The couple are also expected to tie the knot in the summer.

Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie

Hilary Duff's National Hockey League-playing fiancé, Mike Comrie, 29, splashed out in February with a generous diamond engagement ring.

It was reported that the engagement ring which the Edmonton Oilers centre position hockey player gave the former Disney star, 22, cost $1 million (£654,534).  He purchased the 14-carat Princess-cut dazzler in Las Vegas.

Following two years of dating, Comrie proposed while he and Duff were on holiday in Hawaii.  The actress and singer apparently had no idea her hockey-player lover was planning to get down on one knee during their romantic holiday.

The exact details of the proposal remain secret, but the couple have explained that they are planning for a small and traditional wedding and there are reports that they are also looking to buy a $10 million (£6.4 million) home in Beverly Hills.

Coco Rocha and James Conran

The model Coco Rocha got engaged to interior designer James Conran when he popped the question to her in the beginning of March while the couple were staying at a castle in France.

The couple went public with the proposal when the British-born but American-educated Conran tweeted "I am betrothed” and Rocha reportedly changed her Facebook status to "engaged" at approximately the same time.

The pair met when Conran designed the interior of Rocha’s New York apartment. The 21-year-old model, designer, and reporter was thrilled when Conran - who she began dating last year – proposed, and could not wait to start planning their nuptials.  She has now set a date for the 9th June this year, and has arranged for Zac Posen to design her gown.  The wedding will take place at the same French castle in which Conran proposed to her.

David Schwimmer and Zoe Buckman

It was confirmed in March that lead star of the hit American TV show Friends, David Schwimmer, is set to marry British photographer Zoe Buckman.

Schwimmer, aged 43, reportedly met Buckman, 24, while he was in London directing film Run Fatboy Run in 2007, which starred Simon Pegg.

Schwimmer is still highly renowned for playing Ross in hit US sitcom Friends, which ended its hugely popular 10-year run in 2004.  Despite numerous stories of marriage involved in his role as Ross, for Schwimmer this will be his first engagement and marriage.  Schwimmer also directed a number of episodes of Friends before the show ended.

It will be the first trip down the aisle for both Buckman and Schwimmer, but as of yet  the couple have not set a date for the big day.

Simon Cowell and Mezhgan Hussainy

At the end of last month, music tycoon Simon Cowell announced his plans to marry make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy in early September.

Cowell’s ex—girlfriend Sinitta revealed that the engaged couple’s wedding will be themed around a painting

by the revered Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali.  American-born actress and singer, Sinitta was commissioned to help plan and orchestrate their lavish wedding party.

Cowell, 50, proposed to the make-up artist Hussainy, 36, earlier this year but is yet to confirm an exact wedding date.  Reports show that he is however planning to host a generous party to follow the ceremony, complete with melted clocks and angels, imitating Dali's infamous painting, 'The Persistence of Memory'.  Other plans include having waiters in oriental clothes and a melting angel and demon candle works centrepiece at the venue entrance, which is yet to be confirmed.

Hussainy’s parents  Mary and Sayed have now reportedly met with Cowell and granted the couple their blessing, leaving them free to marry this summer.
