How to Find Her Ring Size Without Her Knowing
Dilemma! Choosing the right engagement ring for that special lady is difficult, especially when you want to keep it a secret. Once you’ve decided on the perfect design, you’ll need to know the correct ring size to fit her finger.
The trick of slipping a piece of string round her finger while she’s asleep often fails, either because it’s inaccurate or because she wakes up! Consider the following tactics...
Does she wear other rings?
Watch her put on other rings to see how easily they go on and measure any rings which she has taken off by either:
a) using a ring-sizer template
b) tracing the circumference of the ring onto paper
c) imprinting the ring shape into a bar of soap
d) trying on the ring yourself and marking a line where the ring falls
Or ideally, sneak the ring to a Jewellers while she’s out.
Find an accomplice
Discreetly ask friends or family if they know her ring size, perhaps they have bought her rings before or can help you investigate more subtly. Her best friend will probably know already, girls like to discuss such things just in case. Or even send one of them on a mission to try on rings as a bit of fun during a shopping outing with her.
Make sure you’re looking at and talking about the right finger
Going from right to left on the left hand, there is the thumb, the index, the middle, the ring and the little finger. And remember, hands are not equally sized! An average woman’s size is an M or N in the UK or 6-7 in the US.
A wedding band or engagement ring is traditionally worn on the ring finger of the left hand, however some cultural traditions differ. Promise or gift rings may of course be tailored for any finger.
Sizing up and down
Never fear! If you cannot ascertain the exact diameter measurement of the ring or it turns out to be too small or large, most rings can be resized as long as the band is not intricately covered in gems and diamonds or if the shank of the ring is already too thin.
Rings which have a deep band width will need to be slightly larger than your normal rings so consider this when checking her size.
Below is a ring size chart from the Seventy Seven Diamonds website to help you get an idea for the sizes and their millimetre measurements. Still, in general it’s a lot easier to size down rather than up, so if in doubt it’s preferable to guess up. At least a large ring can be tried on by the recipient and altered afterwards.
