“A thousand times yes!” Maximilian surprised Sahar with a proposal on a bridge in Venice
Getting hitched on Valentine’s Day seems to be a romantic cliché that refuses to lose its flavour. Not many lovers would like to pass up the opportunity to get engaged, married or just pop the question on the universal day of love, perhaps in the ardent hope that the heavens above bestow special blessings for a happily ever after. After all, there’s quite nothing like offering the commitment of a lifetime on a day when the stars align specifically to approve the union of those struck by cupid.
The fascination to make 14 February their most memorable day finds favour with not just the common masses, but celebrities too. To warm up hearts (and to offer inspiration to those who might be experiencing cold feet), here’s a fond recollection of some of the most famous couples making it their big day:

Here at 77 Diamonds we love bringing couples closer together with beautiful diamond jewellery and our latest competition did just that. We selected three couples, who are hoping to get engaged in the near future, and invited them to join us in our Mayfair showroom to take a look at a selection of our stunning engagement rings and to each select which ring they would choose. A big reveal at the end discovered which couple were a perfect match and just how well they know one another. The winning couple got to walk away with a £10,000 diamond that they could then use to fashion their very own engagement ring or another piece of jewellery.

The once overwhelming ritual of picking out the perfect engagement ring has in recent years been simplified with the rise of reputed online diamond retailers. Shopping around for diamonds and diamond engagement rings is no longer that daunting experience it once was with the discomfort of being pressured into a purchase on the spot, indulging in embarrassing conversations regarding pricing or travelling far and wide in search of the ideal ring. Nowadays, you can sit in the comfort and privacy of home comparing numerous online retailers and find quality rings that offer competitive pricing.

Although the online diamond shopping trend has been prevalent for several years now, we have recently witnessed a significant rise. “We have seen a large and consistent year in year rise in consumers buying engagement rings online, and this is now our dominant category,” reveals Tobias Kormind, managing director at 77 Diamonds. “As consumers have become much more comfortable making an informed decision online, supported in part by real diamond pictures and additional email and phone calls with our experts, they have become much more confident to make such a large and important purchase,” he explains.

There’s something irresistibly dreamy about being away from all things familiar with the one you love that makes popping the question on a holiday so uniquely romantic. Whether it’s a weekend getaway a couple of hours away or an isolated beach on the other side of the globe, getting down on one knee in your own little space offers an intimacy unlike any other experience.
Destination proposals are deservedly earning the repute of being romantic beyond belief. The only twist in the plot comes when choosing the destination, for young couples are no longer content with pulling it off in front of the Eiffel Tower or in The Big Apple. Be it a planned vacation or a surprise holiday, going off-beat is the flavour of the season.
If a holiday proposal has been on your mind, our list of the top five out-of-the-box destinations will get you hooked (literally).
Why wear one ring all on its own when you can add another and another and perhaps, another! Rings can be stacked for impact and style and help provide a new spin on your rings. Thankfully, stacking is back in trend. As seen on the likes of Rihanna and Amber Le Bon, it’s time to adorn your fingers with layers of sparkle.
“The one rule is balance”, Catherine Alexander, Founder and Designer of Stanmore, told Forbes magazine, “I personally wear a stack of four or five similar thin rings on my first finger, a tall yet simple shape on my middle finger, and then a short stack of two different-sized rings on my ring finger. That way I have near-uniform ring-height across my hand but the total look isn’t overwhelming.”

This winter, the Natural History Museum, Los Angeles, lets diamond aficionados discover the science behind the sparklers as its Gem and Mineral Vault becomes home to four of nature’s rarest colourful diamond masterpieces. ‘Diamonds: Rare Brilliance’, which opened to the public on 16 December, is said to be the most expensive collection the museum has ever exhibited. The stars of the show are four exceptional coloured diamonds that have never before been seen in public.
